What is Kale?
Kales are leaf plants that are often used for human consumption. Their characteristic color is green and are affiliated with the Brassica family. The latter is a family or clan of vegetables which falls in the same class with vegetables like cabbages as well as sprouts. In most regions, Kales are preferred by many because of their health benefits as well as the ease at which these vegetables grow. For instance, Kales can grow effortlessly and without much difficulty in regions that experience extremely low temperatures. Extremely low temperature regions are often cold and as such, barely support the growth of any kind of plants because the sun’s presence is not manifested. However, Kales defy the odds in such atmospheres since they easily grow without needing much sun. Research has it that low temperature regions produce the sweet tasting Kales and as such, preference is put on Kales that emanate from cold regions.
Types of Kales
Kales, like most vegetables, have their varieties. These varieties are; Ornamental kales, Tuscan kales and the Curly kales. It is easy to distinguish between these types of kales since each have a different appearance and look, surface (texture) and most importantly: taste. In fact, taste distinguishes or separates one type of kale from the other. Curly kale, as the name suggests, is full of curls and a fluffy surface. The stalk of the curly kales is characterized by its gristly nature, a fact that plays a major role in distinguishing it from Ornamental kales. The Curly kale can also be easily identified by its profound green color, one that misses in Ornamental and Tuscan kales.
As pointed out earlier, kales are green in shade and hue but Ornamental kales defy this aspect, since some leaves of the Ornamental type of Kales may manifest themselves in a white hue while some leaves may pass up in purple colors. Stalks of Ornamental kales habitually unify and merge to form a head-like weaved structures.
Tuscan kales present themselves blue and green leaves. The blue hue manifesting itself in Tuscan kales is not profound and as such, one might mistake a Tuscan kale for an ornamental kale. Of the three types of kales, the Tuscan types of kales take the sweetest hence are preferred by those who love eating kales.
History of Kales
To understand all about kales, one has to appreciate and delve a bit into the history of the leafy green: a favorite food for many. Kales derive their origin from a Greek word descent. Due to their axiomatic health benefits, the kale praises quickly spread to jurisdictions and regions like Asia and the entire regions of Europe. The period affiliated with kales being introduced in Europe range from 600 BC to 620 BC. Sticking to the periods of kale introduction in Europe, the citizens of the United States of America first tasted kale in the 17th Century.
Italy, also in Europe, first tasted kales at the end of the 19th Century, the period which it was also discovered in Rome. Italians essentially made good the Tuscan type of kales, which were the first to manifest in this region. With the hue of Ornamental kales being white, it was used essentially and initially as for decorative purposes. Those who planted it on their gardens had no idea of its nutritional benefits. To this effect, they only made good of the plant as a result of its pretty hue to make their gardens extremely beautiful. States in the United States like California made soon appreciated its nutritional benefits and started growing it commercially in the 20th Century. This first happened in 1980.
Health benefits of Kales
- Anti-inflammatory boons related to kales
As a known fact, human bodies need a lot of Omega-3 nutrients in their bodies. To obtain Omega-3 in large quantities akin to those that human bodies need, is often an onerous task. This is because one has to round up all the foods that provide the aforementioned nutrients. Fish is an example of a food that provides Omega-3 nutrients. Kales possess and hold calories which provide Omega-3 in quantities that range from 350 mg to 400mg. Calories as a known fact, are the fundamental and important Omega-3 nutrients needed by the body. With such high amounts of Omega-3 nutrients provided by Kales, it would be increasingly hard and difficult for inflammation in the body of a human being to manifest. The latter by and large is a boon or benefit to human beings that is granted or provided by eating kales.
- Anti-cancer boons granted by kales
Research has it that Cancer has surpassed HIV/AIDS as the leading killer of an entire populace on the entire globe. To this effect, individuals are often advised on the benefits of consuming kales as a way of reducing their chances of contracting cancer in the short or long run. Glucosinolates, a nutrient found in Kales, is instrumental in the preventing the multiple types of cancer present in the world. In fact, research and science has proven that the three types of Kales mentioned herein, contain close to four dissimilar and diverse types of Glucosinolates.
To this effect, when one consumes kales which are then digested in the body, the glucosinolates contained in them is transformed and transmuted by their bodies to form compounds that prevent them from contracting cancer. According to the New York Times, Glucosinolates, a nutrient found in kales, is used as one of the compounds used in the making of medicines used in the management and treatment of most types of cancers in the globe. The latter proves how much kales benefit those, who consume them. With the increase in breast cancer in women and colon cancer to both genders, medics agree on the fact that kales, and especially Glucosinolates compounds, are advised and recommended to those that want to avoid cancer as well as those living with it. Those living with any type of cancer can incorporate in their diet kales, to prevent the multiple spreading of the cancerous cells.
- CARDIOVASCULAR BENEFITS ASSOCIATED WITH KALES
The heart has to be in extremely good condition for a human body to function correctly. This means that a sudden defect or abnormality in the heart can go a long way in rendering a person as unfit or unstable. Many people ensure that their heart is in good condition through extremely expensive methods while they can result to a much cheaper method: kales. High levels of cholesterol play a major role in the contraction of the wide array of heart diseases present.
Example of these heart defects include but are not limited to; heart attacks and failures, strokes, and high blood pressure which is also referred to as hypertension. What role do kales play in preventing or reducing heart diseases? The latter is a question that many would ask. Kales play an integral role in ensuring that the body’s cholesterol levels remains at a very low level since the amount of fats contained in kales is increasingly at low levels.
Researchers have agreed on the fact that kales and more especially boiled or steamed kales, go a long way in ensuring that the body’s cholesterol level stays at significant and increasingly low levels. To this effect, anyone that might want to lower their cholesterol levels may try out kales that are raw/uncooked and steamed. Medics often recommend the use of a drug known as cholestyramine, to those that want to keep their cholesterol levels low or in check.
However, science and extensive research has proved that steamed or boiled kales function better compared to the cholestyramine. Who would have ever imagined this? – A leaf working better than a drug? This is indeed amazing and the more reason why people are advised to feed on kales. Steamed kales reduced close to 42% of the cholesterol levels in the body while cholestyramine, a laboratory drug, reduced the cholesterol levels by only 35%. The difference is astonishing and surprising. The public needs to be exposed to such types of data so that they can make better and more informed decisions.
- IRON BENEFITS ASSOCIATED WITH KALES
It is a known fact that Iron is an extremely important element in the body each and every human being. Beef is known to be the major food affiliated with granting Iron to its consumers. However, science has different view and opinion regarding the latter. Beef contains half of the amount of iron embedded in the Kales. The calories embedded in kales are the main constituents of iron and as such beef only contains half the amount. The importance of iron is substitute to no other as it is one of the major component found and used in generation of human blood.
Hemoglobin, a major part and component of human blood is formed with the help of element iron and so do most of the enzymes found in the human body. To this effect, kales, which have high amount of iron compound is recommended to ensure that there is proper cell growth in humans, as well as proper operation of the one of the most important organs in the human body: liver. Kales is also recommended for young girls who on a monthly basis menstruate as part of their regular body functioning. Kales ensure that the blood lost during menstruation is regenerated as quickly as possible due to the high amounts of iron contained therein.
Detoxification benefits associated with Kales
Detoxification is a process each and every human body undergoes and is mainly seen through or off by the liver. Isothiocyanates is a compound that emanates from the four types of Glucosinolates embedded in kales. The compound plays an extremely major role in ensuring that detoxification in the body cells occurs minimally. The latter fact is associated with the fact that the toxic products emitted through detoxification harm to a great extent our bodies and as such, the process needs minimization. Glucosinolates which form Isothiocyanates when absorbed and digested modify the process of detoxification as they make Sulfur which is essentially important in the final step of detoxification. In addition, Isothiocyanates make it possible for the human body to easily deal with the pressure that emanates from detoxification. This is magical or better said, Kales are magical.
As seen herein, kales have a lot of health benefits which work to benefit each and every human being. With the advent and prevalence of cancer, it is evident herein that kales work to prevent and reduce the spreading of cancer. Also seen is how Kales aid in the detoxification process in human beings. In addition, kales has been seen to promote and support the heart of human beings which detests high cholesterol levels.
